About Us
Together We Make It Home
Houses into Homes (HiH) transforms empty living spaces into safe, comfortable homes by delivering essential furnishings with unconditional positive regard to people in Johnson County, Iowa.
Our core purpose is to address furniture poverty in Johnson County by collecting gently-used furniture and household goods that might otherwise be headed for the landfill. With the help of volunteers, we refurbish, select, and deliver those items to furnish our neighbors’ homes.
After a period of homelessness, addiction recovery treatment, domestic violence, fleeing dangerous conditions abroad, incarceration, health crises, etc., too many of our neighbors close the front door on a new home and turn around to only an air mattress and a folding chair. The agencies whose missions are to help those facing these crises do not have the capacity to collect, store, and distribute furniture widely and efficiently, and HiH addresses this gap.
As of September 2026, we have served over 7,200 community members.
We’ve diverted hundreds of tons of beds, furniture, and other items from the landfill. The families and individuals we serve are referred to us by a broad array of local service agencies. For a full list of Referral Agencies, follow this link.
